Personal and Professional Background

I graduated from the University of Oregon Law School in 1987. Prior to law school, I did my undergraduate work in Geology and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1984. I was admitted to practice law in the State of Oregon in 1987, and in the United States Claims Court in 1992. I am a member of the Oregon State Bar Association.

Prior to college, I served four years with the United States Marines Corps as a Military Policeman (MOS 5811). During that time I also attended the Reserve Sheriff Academy program in 1976-77 in San Bernardino County, California.

At one time or another during my life, I have worked in the following areas related to the criminal justice system. I have been a reserve police officer, a military police patrolman, a prosecuting attorney (4 years), a Justice of the Peace pro tempore (4 years), and a criminal defense attorney (19) years. I have been both a victim and a witness and a trial juror. At the age of 18, I was even a defendant, but if you want to know more about that personal historic event, you will have to make an appointment and pay attorney fees to hear it.

Since leaving prosecution in 1991, and in addition to my criminal defense practice, I have a substantial civil trial practice that includes domestic relations, personal injury, real estate, business and commercial litigation. More than 75 percent of my practice involves some form of adversarial litigation. The remainder involves transactional legal services with the remainder of my time spent serving as a mediator or arbitrator.

Before attending law school and becoming an attorney I worked in many different capacities. I have worked in logging, restaurants, the building trades and truck driving, including driving a tow-truck. The valuable experience I gained in these other areas of employment prior to becoming a lawyer has left me with a real-world, hands-on and down-to-earth perspective that I bring to my law practice.

I have lived in Oregon since 1980. I have been married for over 21 years and have two children.
