Practice Areas Overview

Eugene, Lane County Oregon Trial and Transactional Attorney

At the law office of George L. Derr, Attorney at Law, in Eugene, Oregon, I provide experienced legal representation to Lane County, Central and Southern Oregon. This includes cities such as Bend, Redmond, Grants Pass, Albany, Roseburg, Medford, Coquille and Bandon. Primarily, my practice involves litigation in state and local courts and before arbitration panels and mediators.

A substantial part of my practice also involves non-adversarial transactional matters such as contract negotiations, sale agreements, corporate and business negotiations and transactions, estate planning and real estate transactions.

I believe in treating clients with the respect and dignity, and getting them the results they deserve as quickly and efficiently as possible. I always endeavor to provide my clients with quality legal representation and timely client service.

Court room litigation can be very expensive and time consuming, and full of risk and uncertainty. Consequently, before filing any lawsuit, I spend time being very careful to thoroughly review the case with the client and evaluate whether pursuing litigation makes sense from a legal, practical and economic standpoint. Every case has strengths and weaknesses — there is no such thing as the “perfect case.” My substantial experience enables me to properly evaluate a case’s trial potential and to properly advise my clients accordingly. I can and will try any case in state court, but sometimes it is in the client’s personal and financial best interest to pursue a form alternative dispute resolution (such as arbitration and mediation) which may be more cost and time effective than conventional trial court litigation.

Examples of the areas of the law I practice include:

Criminal Defense

I represent clients in all types of matters including felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic violations. This includes such offenses as murder, robbery, drug offenses, assault, harassment, disorderly conduct, and driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) charges. I have extensive trial experience in Oregon state courts both as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney and will work with you to protect your rights and help you understand the law and your options.

Civil Litigation

Civil litigation is a broad legal term which encompasses many areas. Some of the more common areas in which I practice civil litigation include:

    • Business Litigation
    • Real Estate Disputes
    • Breach of Contract
    • Insurance Claims
    • Construction Contractor and Builder Matters
    • Personal Injury & Wrongful Death
    • Breach of Fiduciary Duties

Real Estate Transactions

If you are entering into a real estate transaction, it is important to have an experienced attorney to protect your rights and advise you of the potential pitfalls and opportunities of any pending real estate transaction before you negotiate or sign any documents. At the law office of George L. Derr, Attorney at Law, I assist clients in residential and commercial real estate issues, including leases, purchase agreements, landlord-tenant matters, and foreclosures.

Arbitration and Mediation Services

I personally and professionally believe in the time and cost saving advantages of Alternate Dispute Resolution procedures such as arbitration and mediation for most cases. Going to a bench or jury trial can involve substantial delays and costs.

My twenty-three plus years of legal experience has enabled me to serve as an arbitrator and mediator in a variety of cases. I have arbitrated and mediated a variety of civil matters including personal injury, domestic relations, contract and real estate matters.

Domestic Relations

I represent clients in divorce and legal separation proceedings, annulments, child custody matters, including modification and enforcement of parenting time proceedings, Family Abuse Prevention Act and Stalking Restraining Orders and Contempt matters and psychological parent and grandparent custody or visitation cases.

If you are contemplating divorce, separation, or annulment, or you are interested in seeking a modification of custody or parenting time, or are a grandparent or other person who wants to establish custody or parenting time of another person’s child, then please contact the law office of George L. Derr, Attorney at Law, directly.

Estate Planning

My office provide wills, trusts (including revocable, irrevocable, tax and elder law planning and life insurance trusts) and powers of attorney (including powers of attorneys for children) to meet the immediate and long term family estate planning needs of my clients.
